If you live in Houston or Austin, there's a fair chance you've spent a weekend out here already. Round Top is in Fayette County. So are the painted churches, the kolache counters in Schulenburg, the courthouse square in La Grange, and a half-dozen other small historic towns.
This is also a county where the ordinary things work. Grocery stores, hardware, restaurants, doctors. From anywhere in the county, you're never more than twenty minutes from a well-stocked town.
Ninety minutes from Houston, Austin, and San Antonio. Fayette County is about as far from all three as you can get before you start heading back toward one of them. Easily reachable, but kept at arm's length.
And then there's the land itself. The Post Oak Savannah and the Blackland Prairie both run through this county and blur across each other for miles. What that produces is beautifully uncommon: wildflower-filled prairies with hardwoods standing in it — open grass and oak shade for miles.
